Georgia House panel OK's optional road tax plan

The Associated Press

3/9/2010

ATLANTA — A special Georgia House panel has approved a transportation funding plan that would allow regions in the state to vote on a one-cent sales tax hike to pay for road improvements.

But Gov. Sonny Perdue says a part of the bill allowing individual regions to opt makes it a "non-starter."

The bill passed out of a special House subcommittee on transportation funding Monday. Under the plan, regions that vote to approve the tax increase would have money to spend on local road and infrastructure projects. Others could reject the increase and would not see any additional funding.

Perdue says the whole state needs to be offered the opportunity to join in.

He suggested he might veto the measure if the opt-out measure isn't removed, saying lawmakers who tacked it on will "bear the consequences."
